Some individuals see their dogs as family members, however, others subject these delightful creatures to cruel and inhumane conditions. One of those unlucky puppies was Cala, a guard dog owned by a technician in San Jose, Costa Rica. Cala was chained so tightly that she couldn’t rest her head or breathe properly. Her owner also rarely fed her and didn’t take her to the vet when she was ill. Fortunately, Cala’s suffering came to an end when concerned neighbors reported her owner to the police and Territorio de Zaguates animal sanctuary. After being rescued, Cala required treatment for malnutrition, injuries, and emaciation. Lya Battle, the owner of Territorio de Zaguates, expressed to the Dodo that Cala appeared to be a helpless creature stripped of her dignity, ready to give up and living in an endless nightmare.
In a leisurely tone, she detailed how the process of healing took its time. The people around her were responsible for inflicting pain on her to help her recover, particularly regarding the cut on her neck that came from being hung tightly by a steel chain for many years.
Despite being rescued, Cala continued to suffer from human abuse. In the month of June, some individuals intruded into the shelter premises to get rid of some dogs by feeding them poisoned sausages.
Out of the group of dogs, 16 of them passed away but one of them, a determined puppy, managed to survive. Fight mentioned that this was likely due to the pup’s smaller size. Despite experiencing some neurological issues, the dog named Cala made a full recovery.
Cala is currently residing with a loving host family and has successfully adapted to socializing with both humans and dogs. Despite her traumatic past of being neglected, abused, and confined, Cala seems to be exhibiting typical puppy behaviors which is a positive sign according to everyone in the household.
Fight described the rescued dog as a happy and determined furry friend, who enjoys being pampered by her foster mother and family. According to him, this rescue story is a battle between good and evil, with love ultimately emerging victorious. Territorio de Zaguates provides a safe haven for homeless dogs in Costa Rica, where they can receive care and attention from people and families.
